The Budget Benefits of Tub and Tile Refinishing

When it comes to bathroom remodeling, a new tub with tile surround can be the priciest item on your “to-do” list.

Like most homeowners, this one upgrade can potentially break your remodeling budget, forcing you to cut corners on items like cabinets, sinks and new flooring. But there is a way to give your bathtub and surround a fresh new look without eating up the majority of your remodeling dollars. Tub and tile refinishing lets you create beautiful new tub and tile surfaces while saving time and money.

How Refinishing Works

Bathtub refinishing, also known as reglazing or resurfacing, is a process that involves changing the old surface of your tub and tile surround and giving it a new, durable coating of porcelain-like quality. First, cracks and scratches are repaired using a polyester bonding agent. Once all damage is corrected, the surface is prepped to receive the new coating.

Typical tub materials, such as porcelain and fiberglass, aren’t designed to take on new coatings, so the existing tub and tile must be etched to create a surface where adhesion can take place. One the etching is done, the new coating is applied. It takes approximately 12 hours for the refinished tub and tile to properly cure; after that, it can be used normally. Basically, your new tub and tile surrounds are completed and ready to use in 24 hours or less — with no need for a demo or a plumber!

The Benefits of Refinishing

Of course, saving money is the most obvious benefit of refinishing as opposed to replacing your old tub and tile surround, but there are plenty of other advantages as well. Refinishing saves time. For most tubs, the process can be done in as little as one day or less, and your tub is ready to use after 12 hours.

A complete remodel of your tub and tile surround is a multi-step process, including the removal of the old tub and tile, prep of the area once the tub and tile are removed, installing the new tub and reconnecting the fixtures, and installing, grouting and sealing the new tile. And if you’re doing the job yourself, this could take several weeks.

Refinishing also allows you to choose a custom color for your tube and tile surround. Replacement typically limits you to white or beige, or requires a special order that can delay your project for weeks. If you have any other areas you’re considering refinishing, like countertops and floors, you can easily choose colors to match or complement your tub and tile surround. And if your bathroom has a granite countertop, we can return it to its original shine with our polishing and resurfacing process.

Money for Other Upgrades

One of the biggest benefits of all the money you’ll save by resurfacing your existing tub is being able to use those savings for other upgrades. By not spending thousands of dollars for a new tub, you can spend more on new cabinetry, hardware, ventilation, and flooring. Many older tubs feature classic designs that are no longer available. Let the vintage look of your existing tub and tile surround inspire you to create a bathroom space that expresses your own personal style and matches the character of your home.
